Desire is treacherous and powerful; it pushes us to the very edge of an abyss, where we need to ask ourselves: what are we willing to pay for a mere feeling of freedom? Can we afford to become ourselves in a society which is not ready for that?
The human world has no mercy for those who cannot walk in it.
This gloomy operatic drama, directed by Šimon Caban (CABANI), reveals a modern view of the story of Rusalka, who, uncompromisingly, yearns to live according to her own ideas. The mystical realm of water nymphs and other water beings comes through to us through the virtual experiences of one of the main characters – a water-sprite (Vodník). Originally a frightening water creature guarding the wood nymphs, in Caban’s production he plays the role of an ageing man who does not understand today’s world very well. And that is why, glued to his virtual glasses, he dreams about a world where all his bad deeds and thoughts remain undiscovered. However, the intrusive memories of his youth force him to relive his tragic fate again and again …
The orchestra, chorus, and ballet department of the Olomouc Moravian Theatre take part in the production.
The opera will be performed in Czech with English subtitles.
The recommended age limit is 12 years of age.
