The collection of thirteen ballads written by Karel Jaromír Erben, first published in 1853, needs no introduction. Perhaps every one of us, as a naughty child, was afraid of Noonday Witch, learned the Christmas rhyme from Christmas Eve, recited The Water-Goblin in front of the class and held his breath while reading The Wedding Shirts or The Golden Spinning Wheel.
The ballads inspired by folklore, focus primarily on female protagonists, mostly mothers, because the author himself considered the bond between mother and her child to be the most fundamental human relationship of all. The heroines of the individual stories thus resolve their tragedies, they are weak and strong, searching and wandering, and all their actions are put on a scale where their deeds are counterbalanced by a relentless moral code that is not to be defied.
The illusive, mystical and perhaps even fatal atmosphere of Erben's Bouquet will be brought to the stage of the Moravian Theatre by Marián Pecko, one of the most prominent Slovak directors of today, for whom this will be his third comeback to Olomouc. After the touching production of Petr and Lucie and the playful family show Mr. Scrooge, this time he will take on a difficult task: to breathe life into a classic of Czech poetry, which has its unique place in everyone's heart.
